The Brutally Honest "Keep or Skip" Reality Check
First-time visitors to China consistently make the same mistake: treating China like Western Europe and trying to cram 8 mega-cities into 14 days. Between massive bullet train distances and summer humidity, an over-packed itinerary leads to pure exhaustion. Here is what veteran travelers recommend dropping and keeping.
❌ 1. Skip: Hiking Up the Leshan Giant Buddha
The Mistake: Buying the standard mountain entrance ticket to see the 71-meter Leshan Buddha.
The Reality: In peak season (and 35°C Sichuan heat), you will stand in a suffocating 2-hour single-file queue down the cliffside staircase. Once you reach the bottom, you are standing so close to the statue that you can only see his toes and an awkward side angle.
What to do instead: Head to Leshan Port (乐山港码头) and take the 20-minute tourist ferry. The boat pauses right in front of the cliff for 10 minutes, giving you a full, unobstructed frontal panorama of the Buddha and the river confluence without climbing a single step.
❌ 2. Skip: Zhangjiajie & Guilin in the Same 10-Day Trip
On a map, Zhangjiajie (Avatar Mountains) and Guilin/Yangshuo (Karst rivers) look reasonably close in southern China. In reality, there is no high-speed direct train between them. The transfer requires changing stations in Changsha or Huaihua, eating up 7 to 9 hours of travel.
The Advice: If you have under 12 days, pick ONE. Choose Zhangjiajie for towering otherworldly stone pillars and adrenaline cable cars; choose Guilin/Yangshuo for relaxed bamboo rafting, cycling through limestone peaks, and riverside cafes. Read our dedicated Zhangjiajie vs. Guilin Decision Guide →
❌ 3. Beware: Tianmen Mountain Cable Car "Route C"
Tianmen Mountain offers three ticket routes: A, B, and C. Routes A and B include the world-famous 7.5-kilometer cable car starting directly from the city center.
Route C, however, forces you to ride packed shuttle buses both ways up and down the dizzying "99-Bend Highway". Thousands of tourists buy Route C by mistake when A and B sell out, only to suffer severe motion sickness and miss the iconic cable car entirely. Always book Route A at least 3 days in advance. ✅ 4. Keep: Sunset Cycling on the Xi'an Ancient City Wall
Xi'an's 14-kilometer Ming Dynasty city wall is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the world. Skip the scorching midday walk. Instead, rent a bicycle at the South Gate (Yongningmen) around 5:30 PM. Pedaling on top of the ancient stone ramparts while the sunset turns the city gold and red lanterns flicker on is an unforgettable highlight. (Featured in Day 5 of the 7-Day Golden Triangle Route).
✅ 5. Keep: The 3-RMB Chongqing River Ferry
Commercial tourist night cruises in Chongqing cost upwards of 150–200 RMB. Instead, board the municipal public ferry from Chaotianmen to Danzishi or Nanbin Road for just 3 to 10 RMB. You get identical, staggering cyberpunk views of the Hongyadong stilt houses and illuminated suspension bridges from the water. (Read more in our Chongqing City Guide).
