Yunnan 8-Day Classic Route: Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La

Tested Rail Corridor β€’ Mild Weather β€’ High-Altitude Pacing

A forum user asked: "Sanity-check my 8-day Yunnan plan with my parents (Kunming/Dali/Lijiang/Shangri-La)". Yunnan is China's premier slow-travel province, blending sub-tropical spring weather, ethnic minority cultures (Bai, Naxi, Tibetan), and dramatic Himalayan foothills. Modern high-speed rail makes connecting these mountain cities remarkably smooth.

Day 1: Kunming → High-Speed Train to Dali

Transit: Land at Kunming Changshui Airport (KMG). Catch the direct 2-hour bullet train from Kunming Railway Station to Dali (倧理). Check into a boutique guesthouse in Dali Ancient Town or along the western shore of Erhai Lake.

Evening: Stroll the pedestrian lanes of Dali Old Town. Sample local grilled goat milk cheese (乳扇 - Rushan) and cold rice noodles.

Day 2–3: Dali & Erhai Lake Cycling

Day 2: Rent an e-bike or bicycle and ride along the scenic ecological corridor bordering Erhai Lake (ζ΄±ζ΅·). Stop at Xizhou Ancient Town (ε–œζ΄²) to admire traditional Bai courtyard architecture and fresh morning vegetable markets.

Day 3: Take the morning cable car up the lush Cangshan Mountain (苍山) trails for panoramic vistas across the three historic pagodas of Chongsheng Temple and the mirror-like lake below.

πŸš† Rail Transfer: Dali to Lijiang (Day 4 Morning)

Take the 1.5-hour morning train from Dali to Lijiang (丽江). The railway climbs steadily through pine gorges into the Naxi heartland under Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Private vehicle, dedicated English guide, boutique hotel bookings, and seamless high-altitude pacing across monasteries and lakes.

Day 4–5: Lijiang Old Town & Baisha Village

Day 4: Explore Dayan (Lijiang Ancient Town). Pro-tip: Wake up at 7:30 AM to photograph the stone bridges and flowing canal water wheels in complete morning serenity before daytime tourist foot-traffic peaks.

Day 5: Take a 20-minute local bus or Didi to Baisha Village (白沙叀镇). It is far less commercialized, home to traditional Naxi tie-dye craftsmen, ancient Dongba murals, and quiet coffee shops overlooking the snow-capped peak.

Day 6–8: Shangri-La (Tibetan Monasteries & Plateau)

Day 6: Board the new railway extension to Shangri-La (ι¦™ζ Όι‡Œζ‹‰) in just 1 hour 20 minutes. At 3,200 meters elevation, take it easy in the afternoon: walk Dukezong Ancient Town and spin the giant golden prayer wheel on Turtle Hill.

Day 7: Visit Songzanlin Monastery (ζΎθ΅žζž—ε―Ί), often called the "Little Potala Palace." Golden roofs, chanting monks, and prayer flags fluttering over the high-altitude wetlands.

Day 8: Fly out of Shangri-La Airport (DIG) back to Shanghai/Guangzhou, or take the fast return train back down to Kunming.
