Mutianyu Great Wall Solo Guide: Skip Badaling Completely

Tested Solo Route • Cable Car & Toboggan Logistics

If you only hike one section of the Great Wall near Beijing, make it Mutianyu (慕田峪). Avoid Badaling at all costs—it is notoriously swarmed by domestic mega-tour groups with megaphones, creating gridlock on the stone steps.

1. The Cable Car vs Chairlift + Toboggan Puzzle

Mutianyu is operated by two different companies, causing immense confusion at the ticket windows:

  • Option A (Enclosed Cable Car to Tower 14): Perfect for families, seniors, or cold weather. Takes you to the central restored wall section with gentle walking slopes.
  • Option B (Open-air Chairlift up + Alpine Toboggan down to Tower 6): The backpacker favorite. You ride an open ski-lift to Tower 6, explore the unrestored steep ramparts up to Tower 20, and ride a wheeled metal toboggan sled winding 1,500 meters down the mountain.

2. How to Get There Without Tour Bus Scams

Do NOT take sketchy day-tour vans from Tiananmen Square offering "50 RMB Great Wall Tours"—they will trap you in jade carving factories and silk shops for hours.

  • The Direct Bus (Mubus / Dongzhimen): Modern official direct tourist coaches depart from Beijing Dongzhimen Subway Station around 7:30 AM–8:00 AM daily (approx. 80 RMB round-trip).
  • Didi Taxi (Direct): Booking a Didi from downtown Beijing takes about 1.5 hours and costs roughly 220–280 RMB ($30–$40 USD) each way. Split among two or three people, it is exceptionally convenient.
